If you've heard "This is WSOF534, the Desert Oasis Campground GMRS Repeater" on your radio, you're in the right place. Desert Oasis Campground runs a small GMRS repeater to help folks stay in touch around the area, whether they're out exploring, traveling with family, or just keeping in contact around camp.
GMRS, the General Mobile Radio Service, is a two-way radio service for families and friends who want to stay in touch over short distances, like around camp, on the trail, or between vehicles on a road trip. It works a lot like the walkie-talkies you may already know, but with more power and the option to use repeaters, which can stretch your range for miles.
To transmit on GMRS you need a license from the FCC. There's no test: you apply online, pay a fee, and the license lasts 10 years and covers your immediate family.
How is it different from ham (amateur) radio? Ham radio requires passing an exam and opens up many more frequencies, long-distance contacts, and experimenting. GMRS is simpler: no exam, a small set of channels, and it's built for everyday talking with the people you're traveling or camping with.

2. Send us a request with your name, call sign, and a quick note on how you plan to use the repeater.
